Tokbolat Togusbayev. Turkic romanticism.

Artists of the 60s are often credited with the title of the “Sixties.” To the number of such in the first rows correlate the name of Tokbolat Togusbayev.

In fact, his brushes belong to such paintings as “Steppe Ballada (1971-1972), “Song Days” (1987), “Sunny Days of Sanlak” (1990), ” Eastern Interior “ (1990), ” Ayak-Kap. Bride “ (1990). In the period of the artist’s creative activity there was a characteristic universal artistic experimentation.

As art critics note, the artist intuitively subordinates pictorial tools and techniques to the musical-rhythmic pattern of the image. It is not by chance that his best works are called โ€œmusical-graphic suitesโ€, and they are created in different genres – subject canvases, landscape, still life, portrait. The names of the works speak already: “Patterns of songs of the steppes”, “Motive”,”Song Days”,”Melody”, “Singing Mountains”. There is a “song element” even in such seemingly “prosaic” works as “Word to the builders” (1973) and “Turksib, 1930″ (1987).

T.Toguzbaev graduated from the Alma-Ata Art School in 1965. His creative development falls on the period of thaw, when in art there is a thirst for change and experiments. In art began “severe style”. In the picturesque symbolism of the young artists of this time romantic aspirations of the era were manifested.

In numerous works, which reflect the traditions of nomadic culture, Tokbolat Togysbayevโ€™s talent as a magnificent colorist and master of composition, who masterfully arranges the space of paintings, is especially powerful. It combines elements of folk arts and crafts, in particular, carpet weaving, with a personal color vision and creates a special festive mood.

Tokbolat Toguzbaev (1940-1996) studied in the workshop of Moldahmet Kenbaev. After graduating from college began to actively exhibit. And he achieved a lot – a member of the Artists’ Union of Kazakhstan, Honored Artist of the Kazakh SSR, he was in demand and officially recognized. His works are represented in the central museums of our country: GMI RK them. A. Kasteev, National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Already in the era of Perestroika, he painted portraits of three great Kazakh biys – Tole-bi, Ayteke-bi, Kazybek-bi, which are now kept in the museum of the Presidential Center of Culture in Astana.

Olga Baturina, Candidate of Art History, Professor of KazNAA named after T. Zhurgenov, curator of the Zhaukhar Gallery gives her assessment of the work:

โ€œEverything here is poetry and music. Everything in this picture is paradoxical, everything is not what it seems. The space is built conditionally, but filled with air. The paint of the painting is rich and bright, but there is no usual daylight.
Each centimeter of this canvas vibrates, each element is dynamic and stationary at the same time. Everything moves and stays out of time. The figures of people, the movement of birds, animals and even rivers are typified, immersed in a kind of mystical space – beautiful, dear, beloved, but incomprehensible. The lines are round, and the colors sound. The flight line of birds soars upward, and each of the birds is motionless. On the one hand, the whole space of the picture is filled with life – growth, flowering, flight (tall grasses, sunflowers, flowers, trees, birds, rushing horses – itโ€™s just amazing how many heroes there are). On the other hand, everything here is Sufi contemplation. Native land as a heavenly place. Space of serenity and love. Tokbolat Togusbayev himself worked thoughtfully, without haste.Who understands life is not in a hurry. โ€

The laureate of immortal art- Alpysbai Kazgulov

Kazgulov Alpysbai – Kazakhstan genius of painting. In his works, literally, all the colors of life are raging art, so subtly combining the eclecticism of all styles of fine art. He is the author of over 6,000 paintings, a collector of 2,000 works of graphics, painting, and sculpture. In his works, literally, all the colors of life are raging art, so subtly combining the eclecticism of all styles of fine art.

He is an honorary member of the Union of Artists of Kazakhstan since 2001, a participant in exhibitions of professional masters of the fine art of the Republican and all-union levels. Alpysbai Kazygulov repeatedly participated in foreign exhibitions: Russia, Japan, the Netherlands and Belgium, the persons who saw the work of talent.

In the canvases of Alpysbi Kazygulov intertwined reality and a fantastic tale of the Kazakh steppe. The images of the girls are exquisitely conveyed, the nomad’s fighting spirit is vividly displayed. A charming palette of colors awakens a stream of thoughts and feelings in the mind of a person who is seeing the picture of a person. Such a true master of his work.

“… And yet I consider myself only a beginner creator, as if to speak more precisely – studying an artist …. Now, after already 40 or 45 years, I begin to understand that everything that is writing – from childhood. What I saw then, what houses, camels, mud huts – now everything seems to be floating in my memory …”
Alpysbai Kazgulov

A piece of biography…

Alpysbai Nagymetovich Kazygulov was born on September 25, 1958, in the city of Aralsk of the Aral district of the present Kyzylorda region of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The talented painter was Born in the family of Nygomet Kazygulov, power engineer previously worked in the system of fisheries of the republic. Mother, who was called Urzia, was also distinguished in society by her industriousness. Many of the Kazygulov family landmarks were order-bearers, teachers, doctors, and warlords. Known from the Kazygulov family, Alpysbai’s elder brother – Sharkhan Kazygulov, prose writer, publicist, translator, PR manager. In 1975, A.Kazigulov finishes 9th grade. The family moves to Almaty. Around this time, the environmental problem of drying up on the Aral Sea, which will have tragic consequences for the entire region for many more years.
In 1980, a young man graduated from the graphic arts department of the Abai Kazakh Pedagogical Institute.

Art and Promise

“The artist’s roads are generally short, if not lengthened by their tireless search”

the rule, to which the painter is true

The path of the young talent was highlighted by numerous successes. However, recognition and fame did not make Alpysbai Kazygulov mercantile, conceited. He still evaluates his work objectively. It is admitted:

โ€œI have been at the easel for thirty years, but the farther, the more I understand that I am just learning to drawโ€.

Alpysbai Kazgulov

Pictures are filled with the same content as their creator. The nomadic lifestyle of the Kazakh people in the works of the author is so detailed and symbolic that the admiration takes place in the soul and mind. The joyful play of colors and shades personify the path of the nomadic people from darkness to eternal light. The author describes his creations as a necessity of striving for movement:

โ€With my canvases I strive to talk about how the people, overcoming difficulties, go to a brighter life. Through the play of colors and lines, I want to convey my mood. My mood is the mood of my people, because I am part of it.โ€

Alpysbai Kazygulov is a patriot of his homeland and people because the life of ancestors became the leitmotif of his creative activity.

โ€œIn my paintings, I want to show that at the beginning of the XXI century, we, the Kazakhs, are only in a good mood. The entire Kazakh philosophy of life is built on a positive, there are no dark tones in it, in other words, what is being done is all for the better. That is, the road is the way to a bright future, and I am sure that our people deserve it!โ€

About collecting…

โ€œCollecting pictures is like an obsession! If you saw the picture and you liked it, you are just shaking, day and night you think about it. This is a strange excitement, I would even say a disease. โ€

The picturesque treasury of paintings by prominent artists is replenished by Kazygulov himself periodically. Many young talents of the easel and brush have the honor to be in the personal collection of the artist. Alpysbai Kazygulov explains his hobby by the need to enlighten people not only by the works of already famous picture writers.

How to be an artist in Kazakhstan?

The hero speaks very fairly and honestly about the position of artists in modern Kazakhstan: โ€œUnfortunately, in our country, there is no former prestige of the artist. In Soviet times, artists were given workshops, apartments, villas, garages. … now the artists do not feel any attention to themselves either from the Ministry of Culture or, unfortunately, from the akimats.โ€

โ€œ In 2007, on the 80th anniversary of one of Kazakhstanโ€™s iconic artists, Kanafi Temirbulatovich Telzhanov, the author of the painting โ€œKokparโ€, considered the best work, reflecting the national mentality of the Kazakhs, representatives of the akimat (edit.-Kazakhstan’s city government) found nothing more than throwing one chapan (edit.- Kazakh national ย cloth) on the shoulders of the hero of the day..โ€,said the artist.

โ€œ I hope that the time will come when power will be treated with respect to artists. We, artists, must feel that we are needed by society, that our paintings bring people knowledge, intelligence and all the brightest things that are connected with progress. โ€๏ปฟ

Disagree with the words of the artist can not. Indeed, the society of creative workers of Kazakhstan is experiencing its not best times, remaining in the shadow of indifference, people do not give up the vocations of their lives, serving in the name of creativity.

โ€œToday, in Kazakhstan, people often lack authoritative opinions of creative people. At the same time, what kind of social position can we talk about, if at the present time many artists cannot even earn their own bread, pay their rent? โ€

Alpysbai Kazygulov remains surprisingly intelligent, disinterested, kind and humane, while his unimaginably beautiful and filigree work has been breathing for a dozen years and will be the eternal property of our people. In 2005, Alpysbay Kazygulov won the international award โ€œEuropean Union of Arts named after Masarykโ€. Now he lives and works in Almaty, where his workshop is located. Last year, a personal exhibition of his paintings was held in Astana.

Batyrkhan Shukenov. Nightingale of Kazakhstan

His name was sung by all the countries of the Soviet Union and the songs of the A-Studio collective are still heard in the playlists of Kazakhstan. Because it is impossible to forget the name of our most talented and sweet nightingale, Batyr.
About the work of the singer, the most famous Julia and love…

The starting point of the creative journey was 1982 when the young student of the conservatory of K.Sagyrbaev began to study the game on saxophone. A little later, the year was marked by a fateful meeting with Bengali Serkebaev, Bulat Syzdykov, and Vladimir Mikloshych, who invited him as a saxophonist to the already known Kazakhstan group โ€œArayโ€. After five years, the young musicians would leave the group under the prerogative of Roza Rymbaeva and go to the flat with their own group “Alma-Ata”, a little later “A-Studio”.

Well, then “Christmas songs”, Moscow concerts and performances. “A-Studio” becomes a reason for the pride of the whole country. So begins the path of the brilliant artistโ€ฆ

“The Way Without Stops” song opens the golden list of A-Studio`s songs. The following hit “Juliya” make a real music resonance. Such Kazakh “Julia” was sung by all nationalities at the same time honoring the independence of Kazakhstan. In particular, this song opened a ticket to a new life for children from Kazakhstan.

According to the deceased, the composition was revived by the rebellion in the late 90s fashion for foreign culture:

Volodya Mikloshich, who composed the lyrics, felt these moods among the people, and the effect was powerful. Beautiful arrangement, good performance and text, which is nothing complicated, you just need to remember the name – Juliya.

Excerpt from the song " Juliya"

"...Discontinued the former deception,
We are divided by the ocean
Goodbye and forget
Back don't go that way
Why sadness reminds me of your name?
Well, let.
I will repeat it again to myself,
Julia..."

As acknowledged by his relatives, friends, colleagues and acquaintances, Batyr, as they called him, was a man of pure soul, not concealing resentment and evil, which people from show business rarely are. His good nature towards others and humanity are provable by his charitable activities, which the singer himself did not disclose.

Love for music, people and native land embodied in full in the artist’s solo musical project started from “Otan-ana”.ย Songs dedicated to Kazakhstan and performed with the penetration, touch with the sound not only every Kazakhstan’s citizen.

Otan-ana,ย Batyrkhan Shukenov

With such careful words, the singer praises the lands of his native land. To the great regret of the nation, a unique and unsurpassed link in folk art left this world at the age of 51 years.

Batyrkhan Shukenov left behind a great heritage, love in the hearts of people. Together with the genius, the youth of an entire era has gone. But the love given by Batyrkhan will remain to live forever…

Kazakh History through Modern Illustrations

Illustrations to the children’s Encyclopedia of Kazakhstan โ€œLegends of ancient Kazakhstanโ€. Author Assol Sas.

Assol Sas, an illustrator

Assol Sas, an illustrator from Almaty. A year before the start of the 2000s, she graduated the Abay Kazakh National Pedagogical University. Since 1995, Assol has done illustrations of the Republican newspapers โ€œSobesednikโ€, โ€œKaravan-Glikโ€, โ€œKaravanโ€, โ€œZhuma-Fridayโ€ and the magazines โ€œZerkaloโ€, โ€œTandemโ€ and โ€œSeasonโ€.

An illustration is a decoration, interpretation or visual explanation of a text, concept or process, designed for integration in published media, such as posters, flyers, magazines, books, teaching materials, animations, video games, and films.

As a rule, an illustration saturates the transmitted thought.

โ€œ In childhood, I hid behind books from reality โ€

On the author’s course book illustration.
Almaty
May 2016.

For May 2016 Sas decided to open the author’s course on book illustration.

As acknowledged by the illustrator, when she did not have work orders, she wrote a fairy tale and illustrated it. Assol is a very welcome guest at various workshops. From the age of 19, starting to work with his father, creativity turned into a profession. Creativity Assol Sas absorbs the spirit of the Kazakh ethnic group and the identity of our culture. The art of the girl combines fragments of historical content transmitted in a modern painting form.
Assol has a lot of experience in creating illustrations. She always in her work gave priority to the book graphics – one of the most difficult areas in the visual arts.

โ€“  It is very interesting for me to create different images, each time trying to understand what exactly the author wanted to say in order to convey his ideas. Most of all I like to do illustrations for dramatic works, to ponder upon the images of heroes. For example, I would very much like to illustrate the works of Shakespeare. I will never undertake to illustrate a book in which there is no drama at all, โ€Assol shared.

Most of the artist’s works, drawn for the children’s encyclopedia are presented below.
